영국에서 마거릿 대처가 재집권에 성공한 1983년 여름,
옥스퍼드 대학에서 영문학을 전공하고 막 졸업한 닉 게스트는
런던에서 대학원 진학을 앞두고 막역한 옥스퍼드 동기이자
은밀히 짝사랑해온 상대인 토비 페든의 집에 ‘게스트’로 머물게 된다.
노팅힐에 위치한 흰 저택에 사는 토비의 부모는 야심만만한
사십대 보수당 초선의원 제럴드와 부유한 은행가 가문 출신의 레이철이다.
여기에 조울증을 앓는 토비의 여동생 캐서린까지
포함한 페든 가족을 통해 닉은 꿈도 꾸지 못했던 화려한 상류사회에 점점 더 깊이 발을 담가간다.
