문제적 작가 크러스너호르커이 라슬로가 이번에는 중편집 『라스트 울프』로 돌아왔다.
표제작 「라스트 울프」와 「헤르먼」 두 작품으로 구성된 이 중편집은
2015년 현지 출간 당시 평단으로부터 ‘크러스너호르커이 라슬로의
문학적 정수를 맛볼 수 있는 책’이라는 평을 받았던 작품집이다.
특히 이 중편집에 수록된 두 작품은 23년이라는 시간의 강을 건너
발표된 작품이라는 점에서 크러스너호르커이 라슬로의 초기작과
완숙기의 작품을 두루 맛볼 수 있는 작품집으로 평가된다.

표제작 「라스트 울프」는 2009년에 헝거리에서 처음 발표된 작품이다.
이에 반해 두 가지 시선으로 한 사건을 다루고 있는 「헤르먼」은 1986년에
출간된 그의 첫 번째 단편집인 『우아한 관계(Kegyelmi viszonyok; Relations of Grace)』에 수록된 작품이다.
절망감에 빠진 철학자가 뜻밖의 기회에 다녀온 스페인 여행에서
‘마지막 늑대’의 이야기를 추적하게 된 사연을 선술집 바텐더에서
들려주는 「라스트 울프」와 은퇴 직전 레메테 숲의 야생 포식자를 퇴치하던
덫놓이 장인 헤르먼의 슬픈 이야기를 두 가지 관점에서 풀어내고 있는
「헤르먼」 사이에는 23년이라는 긴 시간의 강이 놓여 있으나,
평론가 클레어 코다 헤즐턴의 서평처럼 “두 편의 중편 모두에서,
잊을 수 없을 만큼 본능적이고 아름다운 이야기를 만들어낼 수 있는
크러스너호르커이 라슬로의 엄청난 작가적 역량을 집약적으로 보여주고” 있다.
