2010년 민음사에서 간행된 《교감완역 난중일기》가
2013년 유네스코 세계기록유산 난중일기 등재 시에 심의도서로 채택되었고,
그 후의 개정판은 영화 명량·한산·노량의 대본이 되면서 세인들에게 최고의 역작이라는 평가를 받았다.
이번의 개정 3판은 종합정리판인 《신완역 난중일기 교주본》(2021)을
기본으로 하되 한문 용어를 한글로 풀고 최대한 대중들이 읽기 쉽도록
가독성을 높였다.

저자는 40여 년 동안 한문과 초서를 연구한 고전 학자로서 고전 번역과 함께
이순신서체에 영향을 준 왕희지와 손과정의 서법 연구를 병행한 독자적인
영역에서 난중일기의 초서글씨를 모두 해독하여 정본화 된
판본을 만들고 완역을 하였다.
그 과정에서 여러 사료들을 발굴하여 보완하였다.
15년간 교감완역본의 전통을 이어온 이번 책은
새로운 36일치의 일기를 수록하고,2백 여 곳의 오류를 수정하여 내용의
정확도를 더욱 높였다.
특히 그간 소개된 적이 없는 이순신의 영정과 물령망동정중여산
어록, 편지 1통, 단성의 유적지, 유성룡이 쓴 이순신의 전사기록을 수록하였다.
