V. S. 나이폴은 대표작 『미겔 스트리트』(1959) 에서 자신이 태어난

유럽, 인도 등 전 세계로 확장해 식민지 국가의 현실을 냉철하게
그려 냈고, ‘탈식민주의 문학’의 대표 주자로 손꼽히며 세계 문학사에 큰 획을 그었다.
전 생애에 걸쳐 자유와 제3세계, 식민주의에 대한 작품 활동에 매진한
나이폴은 “엄정하고 면밀한 시각에 통찰력 있는 내러티브를 결합해
억압의 역사를 직시하게 해준다.”는 평을 들으며 2001년 노벨 문학상을 수상하는 영예를 안았다.

『자유 국가에서』는 나이폴의 1971년 부커 상 수상작이다.
이 작품은 부랑자, 집시, 외국인 노동자, 식민지 파견 행정관 등
식민지를 둘러싼 다양한 방랑자들의 굴곡진 삶을 제시하며 정체성을 둘러싼 이방인의 고뇌를 다룬다.
네 편의 단편과 한 편의 중편으로 구성된 이 소설 속에 등장하는 주요 인물들
모두 모국을 떠나 삶의 뿌리와 공동체를 상실한 채 어디에도 속하지 못하는 삶을 살아간다.
나이폴은 영국 식민지인 서인도제도 트리니다드섬의 인도계 이주민
3세로 태어나 영국 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 유학한 뒤 영국에 정착하여 작품 활동을 지속했다.
식민지에서 태어나 본국의 이민자로 살았던 개인적 경험을 확장시켜
식민과 탈식민, 유럽과 비유럽의 대립 구도, 식민지 독립 후 문화적
혼돈기의 삶을 소재로 개인의 정체성 문제를 깊이 있게 다루었다.
