『멋진 신세계』(Brave New World)는 올더스 헉슬리가 1932년에 출판한 가상세계에 대한 SF 소설이다. 소설의 세계에서는 과학의 발달로 인간이 시험관 아기로 태어나 시스템에 의해 수정되고, 각각의 계급에 맞게 길러져 병 속에서 제조되며 사회의 통제 속에서 생활한다. 이 소설은 유토피아에서 태어난 인간과 그렇지 않은(책 속에서는 야만인으로 지칭) 인간과의 사고의 대조를 현실감 넘치게 그려내어 읽는 이로 하여금 소름이 끼치게 만들고 있다.

가상 세계의 인간들은 생산되어질 때 계급이 정해지고 거기에 맞추어 신체적인 발육과 지적인 능력이 약품으로 조절되어 생산되어진다. 그리고 이후로는 반복적인 수면교육과 학습으로 인간은 기계화 되며 ‘소마’라는 약품으로 감정이 길들여진다. 남녀의 관계는 단지 성적인 쾌락의 대상이다. 소설은 결혼, 사랑, 애정의 개념이 모두 사라진 세계를 그리고 있으며, 인간은 인간에 의해 감정과 계급이 정해진다.

헉슬리는 이 책에서 우리가 과학의 공포를 올바르게 깨달아야 한다고 말한다. 과학은 완전히 인간의 소유물이며. 우리가 과학의 발달을 정확하게 인식할 때, 과학은 우리에게 무한대의 평화와 행복을 누리게 해줄 수 있다는 것이다. 즉, 진정한 인간의 양심이 과학을 관리할 때에야 비로소 과학은 무한대의 행복을 나누어 준다.

과학은 우리를 기아와 질병과 천재의 고통에서 벗어날 수 있게 할 수 있다. 아니, 꿈과 같은 낙원을 꾸며줄 수도 있을 것이다. 그러한 낙원은 가능하지만 우리들 자신이 진정한 양심에서 우러나오는 과학적 비판을 게을리 하지 않고, 과학 관리의 올바른 태도란 어떤 것인가를 대담하게 실천할 줄 알아야만 한다.

헉슬리가 이 책에서 다루고 있는 태생아(胎生兒)적인 세계가 시험관 탄생의 세계로 옮겨질 것이라는 몽상은, 결코 몽상으로 끝나지 않을 것처럼 현재의 과학은 발전하고 있다. 헉슬리는 이미 오래전에 이에 대한 문제를 제기한 것이다.
