이들은 단지 돈을 벌어 출세하고자 프랑스 군대에 입대한다.
그러나 독일과의 전투에서 친구 마뎀바가 너무나
비극적인 죽음을 맞이하자, 알파는 복수심에 불타오르고
전쟁의 광기에 눈뜨게 된다는 슬픈 스토리다.

티 없이 맑았던, 갓 스물이 된 주인공 알파의 담담한
독백을 따라가다 보면, 누구도 원치 않았던 전쟁의 참상을 목도하게 된다.
핏빛 전장에서 친구 마뎀바를 잃고서 푸른 눈의 적들을
상대로 복수극을 펼치던 알파가 급기야 어떻게 악마
군인으로 변해가는지를 작가는 시적인 문체로 담아내고 있다.

스무 살 젊은이가 스스로 악마(demm) 되기를 결심한 이유

알파의 기억을 따라가다 보면, 악마(demm) 군인이라
불리게 된 알파의 마음 깊숙한 곳에는 영혼의 형제인
마뎀바와의 우정, 실종된 어머니와 고향에 대한 그리움,
처음으로 자신을 허락했던 여자친구 파리와의
아픈 기억들이 아름답게 남아있음을 알게 된다.
그럼에도 불구하고 알파의 어두운 이면은
‘스스로 생각하고, 악마가 되기를 결심’한다.
광기의 복수극을 자신의 운명처럼 받아들인
알파의 어두운 영혼은, 모순투성이인 관습이나
법규를 따르기보단 스스로 생각해서 행동하는 것이
옳다고 속삭이며 알파를 더욱 깊은 수렁 속으로 끌어들인다.
