저자 특유의 섬세한 묘사와 사실적인 인물들은 이번 작품에서도 여전하다. 저자는 마치 자서전을 쓸 수 있을 정도로 작품에 등장하는 모든 인물들을 세세하게 설정하는 작가로 알려져 있다. 이번 작품에서 역시 살해 당한 노인들의 삶을 짧지만 세세하게 작품 안에 농축시켜 표현해내고 있다. 몇 가지 사건과 표현만으로도 인물들의 삶을 독자에게 고스란히 전달하는 그 교묘한 구성은 몇 번을 읽어도 혀를 내두르게 만든다. 수십 년의 세월을 넘나드는 장대한 구성과 복잡한 사건, 그리고 근현대사에 대한 고찰까지 담아내려 시도하고 있음에도 책을 놓을 수 없는 자신을 발견하게 될 것이다.
