역사적 사건을 배경으로 한 이 작품은 필사쟁이의 삶을 통해 사회와 개인의
이데올로기, 지식계층과 일반 백성들의 생활사 및 문제의식 등을 내밀하면서도
섬세하게 그려낸 역사 동화책이다.

주인공 장이의 아버지는 필사쟁이로, 밤낮 가리지 않고 언문(한글) 이야기책을
비롯해 수많은 한자 책을 베껴 쓰며 생활을 이어 나간다.
그런데 어느 날, 천주학 책을 필사했다는 이유로 천주학쟁이라는 오명을 쓰고 관아에 끌려간다.
장이의 아버지는 장독이 오를 만큼 매를 맞고 나와 산송장처럼 누워 사경을 헤맨다.

한순간에 불어 닥친 태풍 앞에서 가진 것 없는 장이네 부자는 속수무책일 수밖에 없다.
이와 같은 이야기를 역사적 사실을 바탕으로 탄탄한 구성력을 발휘해 깔끔한 문장과
세련된 묘사로 이야기를 구성해냈다.
장이의 캐릭터를 비롯해 인물 하나하나의 특성이 눈앞에 그려지듯 생생하게 다가오는 작품이다.
