리안 감독의 대표작이자 양조위, 탕웨이 배우가 열연하여
화제를 모았던 영화 「색, 계」의 원작 소설 「색, 계」(1979)가 표제작이다.
이 소설은 장아이링이 친일파 난징 정부의 관료였던 첫 번째
남편에게서 전해 들은 실화를 바탕으로 썼다.
이외에도 전시의 봉쇄 상황에서 급속도로 가까워지는
두 사람의 이야기 「봉쇄」, ‘붉은 장미’처럼 매력적이지만
자유분방한 연인을 저버리고 순수하고 순종적인 ‘흰 장미’를
선택해 결혼한 남자의 최후 「붉은 장미 흰 장미」, 가난한
가정교사가 부유한 유부남과 사랑에 빠지지만 끊어 낼 수
없는 혈연 때문에 갈등하는 「증오의 굴레」 등 총 다섯 편의 걸작 단편이 수록되어 있다.
