모옌, 옌롄커와 함께 중국 현대문학을 대표하는
작가 한사오궁의 『마차오 사전』이 민음사 세계문학전집으로 출간되었다.
이 작품은 1968년 문화 대혁명 시기 작가 한사오궁이 후난성 미뤄현의
작은 산골 마을에서 강제 노동에 동원되었던 경험을 바탕으로 한 자전적 소설이다.
낙후된 농촌을 근대화한다는 사명을 띠고 시골로 간
이른바 ‘지식 청년’ 중 하나였던 그는 마차오 사람들이 쓰는
언어를 통해 그들이 문명과 자연, 길흉화복에 대해 독특한 사고방식을 지니고 있음을 알게 된다.
그리하여 115개 단어에 해설을 붙이고 그 속에 에피소드를
끼워 넣는 방식으로 쓴 『마차오 사전』은 소설임에도 ‘사전’이라는 타이틀을 얻게 되었다.
『마차오 사전』 한국어 판 말미에는 표제어를 우리말 가나다순으로 정리한 목차,
‘가나다순으로 찾아보기’를 더하여 원서의 사전 형식을 살렸다.
2009년에 모던클래식 시리즈로 소개되었던 『마교 사전』의 개정판이다.
