이스라엘 문학을 대표하는 작가이자 현대 히브리어를 모국어로
쓴 1세대 작가 아모스 오즈의 『블랙박스』가 민음사 세계문학전집으로 출간되었다.
세계문학전집에 앞서 출간되어 있는 그의 대표작 『나의 미카엘』(1968)은
이상과 현실의 간극으로 방황하는 인간상과 사랑의 시작을 섬세하게 그려 낸 수작이다.
그 작품이 전 세계 29개 언어로 출간되며 아모스 오즈는
현대 히브리어 문학을 대표하는 작가로 부상하기 시작했다.

이후 『여자를 안다는 것』, 『사랑과 어둠의 이야기』, 『유다』 등의
작품을 발표하며 이스라엘의 현대 사회를 두루 조망하는 거장으로 문학적 업적을 인정받았다.
프란츠 카프카 상, 괴테 상, 이스라엘 문학상, 박경리 문학상 등
전 세계 유수의 문학상을 두루 수상하고 레지옹 도뇌르 훈장을 수여받았다.
또한 이스라엘과 팔레스타인의 평화적 공존을 주장하며 ‘이스라엘의 양심’으로 많은 지지와 존경을 받았다.

그가 오랫동안 생활하던 키부츠 훌다를 떠나 1987년에
발표한 『블랙박스』는 한때 부부였던 알렉스와 일라나,
그들의 아들 보아즈, 일라나가 재혼한 미쉘, 알렉스의
변호사까지 모든 인물이 편지를 주고받으며 가슴속에 묻어
둔 ‘블랙박스’를 해독하고 가족의 의미와 사랑의 정체성을 되새기는 작품이다.
십여 년간 이스라엘에 거주하며 예루살렘 히브리 대학교에서
공부한 윤성덕, 김영화의 번역으로 국내 최초 현대 히브리어 완역본으로 출간되었다.
