노벨 문학상과 부커 상 수상 작가이자 2차 세계 대전 이후 영국
문단을 대표하는 작가 윌리엄 골딩의 소설 『핀처 마틴』이 민음사 세계문학전집으로 출간되었다.
첫 소설인 『파리대왕』에서 골딩은 외딴섬에 고립된 소년들이 원시적인
야만 상태로 퇴행해 가는 과정을 그렸다. 인간 사회를 우화적으로
묘사한 이 작품은 전 세계적으로 폭발적인 인기를 끌며 이후 영화와 연극으로도 만들어졌다.

첫 작품의 성공 이후『상속자들』(1955),『자유 낙하』(1959), 『첨탑』(1964),
『피라미드』(1967) 등 꾸준히 작품 활동을 한 골딩은 1980년 부커 상,
1983년 노벨 문학상을 수상하고 1988년 영국 왕실에서 훈작사
작위를 받으며 문학적 진가를 증명했다.
주로 계급과 문명, 야만 등의 문제에 천착한 작품을 집필해 온
골딩의 1956년 작 『핀처 마틴』은 죽음의 공포와 거대한 자연에
짓눌린 인간의 정신이 맞닥뜨리는 한계에 관한 치밀한 탐구이다.
