조지프 콘래드의 『노스트로모』가 민음사 세계문학전집으로 출간되었다.
콘래드는 폴란드에서 태어나 선원으로 오랜 시간
서인도 제도와 호주, 동남아시아, 인도 등을 항해했다.
이 경험을 통해 그는 19세기 말의 국제적 역학 관계를
유럽에 국한되지 않은 다양한 시각에서 고찰했고,
스물한 살에 처음 영국 땅을 밟고 영어를 배워
서른일곱에 작가로서 두 번째 삶을 시작했다.
1904년에 쓴『노스트로모』는『암흑의 핵심』(1899),
『로드 짐』(1900) 등과 더불어 콘래드의 대표작이자
“영어로 쓰인 가장 위대한 정치 소설”로 손꼽히며
