1990년대 붕괴된 사법 체계 속에서 폭력 조직과 청부 살인자가
만연한 메데인의 현실을 가감 없이 드러낸 『청부 살인자의 성모』는
출간 즉시 비평가와 독자들의 관심을 동시에 끌며 바예호의 대표작이 되었다.

2000년 바예호가 직접 시나리오를 쓰고 바르베 슈뢰더가 연출한 동명의 영화로 제작되기도 했다.
