일연의 『삼국유사』는 고구려, 백제, 신라 삼국뿐 아니라
고조선에서부터 고려까지, 우리 민족의 흥망성쇠의 역사를 폭넓게 다루고 있는 작품이다.
이 책에는 다른 역사서에는 보기 어려운 단군 신화를
비롯한 우리 민족의 신화와 설화, 그리고 방대한 양의
불교와 민속 신앙 자료가 한데 아우러져 있다.
무신 정권과 몽골의 침입 등 국내의 정세가 안팎으로
어수선하고 불안해지자, 일연은 오랜 연구 동안 모아 온
자료들을 정리하여 우리 민족의 자부심을 고취하고자 했다.
그리하여 우리나라의 역사를 자주적인 입장에서
이해하고 작자의 자유롭고 개성적인 상상력으로 해석해 낸,
다시 말해 민족 주체성의 토대 위에서 우리의 고대사를 바라본 최초이자 최고의 역사서를 탄생시켰다.

『삼국유사』는 ‘중화주의’나 ‘화이사상’에 물들어 있던
당시의 사회 풍토 속에서도 우리나라가 유구한 역사를
자랑하는 민족임을 드러내 주었을 뿐 아니라,
김부식의 『삼국사기』가 유학적 관점에 의해 의도적으로
배제한 탓에 후세에 알려지지 않았을 수도 있었던 불교적,
설화적 요소들을 보완해 내었다는 점에서 그 가치가 높다.
『삼국사기』와 더불어 우리 고대 사적의 쌍벽을 이뤄
오던 『삼국유사』는 2003년 국보 및 보물로 지정되었다.

이 책은 민음사에서 출간하는 '세계문학전집'166권에 해당한다.
