『춘향전』은 오랜 기간 성숙을 거듭해 온 우리 서사 문학사의 전통 속에서 탄생한 작품이다. 암행어사 설화, 염정 설화, 열녀 설화 등 민간에 널리 유포된 설화가 작품 형성에 일정 정도 영향을 미쳤고, 『숙향전』과 같은 애정소설도 영향을 미쳤다. 뿐만 아니라 조선 시대 동아시아 사회를 풍미했던 중국의 유명한 한시와 고사 등도 많은 영향을 미쳤다. 『춘향전』에는 수많은 고사와 한시 구절들이 등장한다. 이로 인해 『춘향전』의 장면성과 수사성이 더 높아진다. 이와 같이 『춘향전』은 우리 서사 문학사의 전통을 고스란히 압축하면서도 그 전통을 뛰어넘는 수작이다.

『춘향전』은 가히 국민소설이라 할 만하다. 한국 사람이면 어른 아이 할 것 없이 『춘향전』을 모르는 사람이 없을 것이다. 19세기에 유행한 작품이지만 그 인기는 지금도 여전하다. 한국 최초의 오페라가 「춘향전」이었으며, 길지 않은 한국 영화사에서 한 소재로 12회 이상 영화화될 정도로 무궁한 창작의 원천이 된 작품이다. 그런 까닭에 『춘향전』은 뮤지컬, 영화, 드라마 등을 통해서 끊임없이 재창조되고 있다. 또한 「춘향가」를 비롯한 한국의 판소리는 유네스코 지정 ‘인류 구전 및 무형 유산 걸작’으로 지정되어 있다.

이 책에서는 완판 『열녀춘향수절가』 84장본과 경판 『춘향전』 30장본을 저본으로 현대 역을 했다. 완판 84장본은 『별춘향전』 계열이 개작에 개작을 거듭하면서 완성된 19세기 이본이다. 현존하는 이본들 중 『남원고사』와 더불어 가장 작품성이 뛰어난 이본으로 인정받고 있다. 『춘향전』의 생동감을 잘 살린 이본이다. 여기에 완판 『열여춘향슈졀가』 영인본을 덧붙였다.
