김기찬(1938-2005)은 자신이 태어나고 자란 서울 도심의‘ 골목안 풍경’을
일생 동안 쉼 없이 기록한 사진가다.
1960년대말 중고 카메라 한 대를 마련해 출퇴근길에 마주친 행상들을 찍기 시작하여,
서울역 앞 군상들을 따라 그들의 생활터전인 중림동
골목으로 찾아 들어가면서 이 평생의 테마가 탄생하게 된다.

그러나 1980년대말부터 진행된 재개발로 인해 골목들은 하나 둘 사라져 갔고,
자연히 그의 작업도 함께 마감될 수밖에 없었다.
이처럼 김기찬의 골목 이미지는 그의 사진인생 자체이자,
한국의 산업화, 도시구조 변천의 역사이기도 하다.
궁핍했지만 따뜻한 인연들로 가득했던 그 샛길과 모퉁이들은
쉽게 망각될 수 없는 우리의 흔적이며, 사진은 그 기억의 단편들을 그립고도 슬프게 되살려 놓는다.
